CRUNK DRINK

The popularization of crunk music can lead to its development and franchisement into other industries outside of the music industry. This can be seen in the creation of Crunk Energy drink promoted by Crunk artist Lil Jon

Lil Jon started his own wine label

Recently, Lil Jon created Little Jonathan Winery. This is his first major business venture after he launched Crunk Energy Drink back in 2004. He said he’s going to do some private label stuff for parties, so he chose to sell wines.

The Future of Crunk Music

The post is taken from raletalk.

In 20 years time , white kids from the suburbs of the south will be making crunk music with a live band , obscure radiohead / coldpLay samples and be labelling it ‘Progressive’.

They’ll claim what they’re doing is “real crunk music” and the current “crunk” is too corporate and mainstream. Even though the kids from the places where crunk started are still listening to “maintream crunk music”.

They’ll say crunk forefathers like lil jon and lil boosie made real crunk , and represented crunk culture , but todays artists dont do that. Old crunk acts will start doing tours of Alternative Rock Music Festivals, catering to their new found fans.

get low!

We’ve decided on Get Low by Lil Jon (i believe) for our DJ for a day. To me this song is about as crunk as it gets. Just watching the video is convincing enough. I provide a link to the music video as well as the lyrics. To me, the most important aspect of the song is who it targets. The target group is people in their 20’s: people that would frequently go to clubs and parties (i.e. college kids). The song has themes that, although may seem extremely offensive and inapporpirate to some, the targeted group can associate and relate to. They include dancing, drinking, and sexy or wild acts, all of which can easlily be understood as party activities. It easy to see how easy this music is accepted, almost needed, in social situations where people are having a good time.

the other side of lil jon

The first article is just a Q & A with Lil Jon. I foiund it interesting because most of what i’ve heard him say is just “Whhhat?” and “Yeeaah!”. It was intersting to see how he talked outside of the crunk atmosphere. He really cares about how he is percieved by others. On more than one acount he makes the point that he is quite intelligent and that you must be to do what he does. Another interesting move of his is creating a wine business (mentioned in the article). This next article talks about the winery. What struck me the most is that Lil Jon cares a lot about the quality, managment, and reputaion of his wine business. This just proved to be an interesting view into the life of one of the biggest crunk hiphop artists alive.

Basic Background about Crunk Music

Taken from Crunk, another great blog that concentrates solely on crunk music.

With the rising popularity of Southern rap music in the new millenium, we’ve witnessed the emergence of a new genre. Spawned in Atlanta, with roots deeply planted in the fertile southern soil of Bass, Crunk has grown into a force to be reckoned with. Featuring driving bass heavy beats, and frenetic chanting, Crunk music has taken over clubs across America.

If you’re not sure exactly what Crunk is, here’s an idea: Think of it as hip-hop’s version of punk or metal rock. Close your eyes and imagine an artist aggressively chanting – perhaps rapping, but more than likely yelling – simplistic lyrics into the mike. Ok… now picture what sounds like 100 (but is really more like 3) dudes behind him chanting the exact same thing as if they were of one voice.

Now while that’s firmly planted in your mind’s eye, envision the dancefloor or concert floor… whoa… it’s turned into the swirling mass of bodies, or mosh pit, once synonymous with punk rock shows and metal rock gigs.
